My rough idea was to head over to Greece, Italy and Morocco after Turkey but I was easily persuaded by Monique to head to Albania and Montenegro instead as she had such an amazing time there. I love that I was able to experience a part of the world that most people either don't know exists or wouldn't be able to find on a map (myself being one of these people before I went there). This is what traveling is all about!
Ulcinj was a cool beach town with a nice old town area. I stayed in the only hostel in the town, but it was the best! And I was there with a friend I had met in my hostel in Tirana (we were actually on the same flight out of Istanbul) which was great. Something I realized while traveling in Albania and Montenegro is that because it isn´t as popular as other European countries and there are a couple of "popular" routes to travel between the two countries you are constantly meeting people who are going in the same direction as you or have come from the direction you are heading in. I also met a lot of people who knew travelers I had met in previous places, did any of that make sense to anyone else other than myself?
I think Žabljak was my highlight of Montenegro, even though it rained on one of my days there meaning I had an inside day at the hostel! Žabljak is basically known for hiking because of Durmitor National Park which is there, and so that is what I did. There are lots of different trails to choose from, I went up Savin Kuk mountain which was around 6 hours there and back.
