I finished up in Ireland and flew straight from Dublin to Berlin. When I first set out on my travels, Germany wasn't on the top of my list but then I went to the German Markets while I was in England, and also everyone who I spoke to said that Berlin was amazing so I thought hey, why not! I was a little bit nervous because I had so much trouble going through customs in England and people were telling me they were stricter in Germany. But, just like Spain I sailed right through which was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
I caught a train from the airport and I have to give a shout out to the handsome and kind German man who carried my very heavy suitcase up the stairs at the train station (what a great way to start off in Germany right?). I stayed at St Christophers for four nights, and I have to say this hostel was probably one of the best I have been to and it had a lot to do with one little feature, the beds had curtains! This is such a luxury as anyone who has stayed at hostels knows, because you don't get a whole lot of privacy and also there is always someone being super considerate who will come home in the early hours and turn the light on! Oh and also, they had free breakfast! Score!
I had a list of things written down before I got to Berlin that I wanted to tick off and I managed to do most of them. The things I was lucky enough to see were:
-Holocaust Memorial
-Berlin Wall
- Brandenburg Gate
-East Side Gallery
-Check Point Charlie
-Alternative Berlin Tour
-Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
On my first day I did another free walking tour and actually saw a lot of the things on my list which was awesome (I told you the free walking tours were becoming my thing), I also did an alternative tour a couple of days later which you have to pay for but it was cool to see different things. We saw a lot of street art and also some of the well know squats and even where a man lives in a tree house in the middle of the street (this story is actually totally interesting, so if you go to Berlin try and find it!)
Embarrassingly I don't know a lot about world history in general so Berlin as a whole was a learning experience for me and Sachsenhausen was something I don't think I will forget. I didn't take any photos as it felt strange to me to do so but you can and people did. I spent a couple of hours there and left with a very heavy feeling inside and a lot of confusion as to how people can do such awful things to one another.
